Liver Functions

Hepatitis

The liver has three main functions:

  1. Detoxifying Blood
The liver processes blood from the intestines and stomach. It cleans the blood by removing toxins from substances such as alcohol, drugs, and chemicals.
  2. Storing Glucose
The liver produces glucose from carbohydrates and regulates its level in the blood. The glucose is stored in the liver as glycogen. It is transported though the blood when energy is needed.
  3. Producing Bile
The liver creates bile – a thick, yellow-green digestive fluid that absorbs fat. Bile is stored in the gall bladder until it is needed to process fats in the small intestine.
